UPENDO CHILDREN EDUCATION AND REHABILITATION CENTER

INTRODUCTION

Upendo Children Education and Rehabilitation Center is a community based organization situated in Huruma/New Mathare area of outering road in Mathare division, Nairobi, Kenya. The project is situated in an economically deprived slum of Nairobi where poverty, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, child abuse, drug abuse, unemployment and illiteracy are at a very high level while social economic structures like hospitals, clinics, schools and proper infrastructure lacks.

The resultant impacts are skyrocketing infections, high mortality rate in both children and adults, broken and single family homes, neglect of the sick and a high number of orphaned and abandoned children

Since its inception and registration in 2001 by the community and for the community, the center has over five hundred students from kindergarten to eighth grade(nursery school to standard eight). The children are offered proper education including meals as most of them only survive through the meals they get at the center.

Most of the teachers live in the same community and are paid minimal wages depending on donations and in most cases happen to work voluntarily because of lack of finances to cater for teachers.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to intervene for the socio-economically disadvantaged children, their families and communities through working towards securing them food, shelter, clothing, education and health, thus assuring the children their basic rights. Our progress in achieving this mission has largely depended on the contribution of well wishers.
